Let’s take a look at some of the best results from the weekend.

Argentina (2) vs. Peru (1): It was a long time coming, but Argentina finally came away with a WCQ win. Diego Maradona’s men fought for a hard victory that was only sealed in the third minute of injury time.

The first half didn’t produce any goals, but Gonzalo Higuain should have converted in his first ever Argentina cap in the 18th minute. Argentina created the bulk of the remaining chances, but couldn’t find the back of the net – the half finishing 0-0.

The second half started well for Peru with a speculative shot hitting the crossbar, but they weren’t in control for much longer when, on 48 minutes, Higuain scored his first ever goal for the Albicelestes. Argentina thought they had it won, but in the final minute of regular time, Hernan Rengifo equalized, and Maradona looked to be on the way out. Luckily for him, though, super-sub Martin Palermo cracked the winner three minutes into stoppage time.

Cyprus (4) vs. Bulgaria (1): Even a Dimitar Berbatov goal couldn’t stop Bulgaria from missing out on another World Cup finals berth. The Cyprian outfit with nothing to lose destroyed Bulgaria’s South African dream with a 4-1 drubbing at home.

Constantinos Charalambides kicked off proceedings with a quick-fire double within nine minutes. The Bulgarians didn’t know what to make of such an incredible start to the game, and were unable to find their feet until the final minute of the first half. Berbatov halved the lead, but it wouldn’t be long before they were behind by two goals again.

Michael Konstantinou made certain of that in the 58th minute when he smashed the ball into the back of the net. And it was all but over twenty minutes later, with Efstathios Aloneftis picking up Bulgaria’s fourth.

Wednesday the 14th will also see plenty of World Cup qualifiers, with the final group matches in Europe and South America being played.

Here’s a preview of two of the most important match-ups.

Uruguay: +140
Draw: +230
Argentina: +170

Uruguay vs. Argentina: Uruguay must win this match to ensure a place in South Africa next year. A string of poor results for Argentina has given the Uruguayans the shortest odds, but they will know that a draw will not be enough to guarantee them even a playoff spot.

The victory over Peru will have given Argentina confidence, but a loss on Wednesday could see Argentina miss their first World Cup finals in several decades. If Uruguay do manage to come up with the goods, and Ecuador take down Chile, then Argentina will be relegated to 6th on the ladder, and out of contention for South Africa.

Switzerland: -120
Draw: +225
Israel: +350

Switzerland vs. Israel: With Greece almost a shoe-in to defeat Luxembourg this week, Switzerland will need to take at least a draw against Israel to ensure a guaranteed World Cup place. Alexander Frei will be hoping to add to his five-goal tally for Switzerland this campaign, and if he finds his form the Swiss will be tough to beat.

Israel are not out of the running however, and a win over Switzerland would put them in a great position for a play-off spot. Local hero Elyaniv Barda has already kicked six goals for Israel so far, and you can wager that he will be looking for all three points come Wednesday.
