Del Potro upsets Federer

With all of the drama and glory going into the final tournament of the US Open, who could have thought that yet another massive surprise was about to unfold?
The men’s Finals did not let us down, as Juan Martin del Potro and Roger Federer played five sets of absolutely fabulous tennis in which each player was holding on for that chance at the Grand Slam title. In the end, it was del Potro that came out on top in a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 stunner.
No one could have predicted the outcome, despite del Potro’s excellent performances leading up to the Finals, he was 0-6 in matches against Federer. Add to that the amazing performance Federer put up against Novack Djokovic in the Semis and you would most likely think that it was going to be a record sixth US Open title for the Swiss tennis star.
Del Potro just flat out dominated Federer, and though Federer had his chance to seal the deal in the fourth set, del Potro wouldn’t have it. His powerful forehand sent shots sailing past Federer, who by the fifth set had fallen apart. Del Potro earned his victory and became the first man besides Rafael Nadal to beat Federer in a Grand Slam final in the last five years. This also marks the first time del Potro has reached the Finals of a Grand Slam tournament, and the first Grand Slam title of his career.
Federer’s reaction after the match had finished was markedly different from that of the Australian Open when he lost to Nadal in an intense showdown. He didn’t look defeated; he just looked irritated. There’s little doubt that Federer will be out for some redemption the next time these two meet, and that’s a match that I’ll be looking forward to. In the mean time, we’ll all just have to revel in the unforgettable 2009 US Open. Serena blew her top, Clijsters made a comeback, Federer hit the shot of his life, and del Potro toppled a champion. Now that’s a Grand Slam tournament.
