JoeyChestnut_450x559Maybe it’s not the first thing that springs to mind when considering Fourth of July celebrations, but Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest has been around for long enough to make its mark on obscure sports history.

The 94th annual Hot Dog Eating Contest will take place on Saturday and, wouldn’t you know it, BetUS has posted odds on how many hot dogs the winner will have to consume in order to take the title. Obviously, any fan of the sport will know that there are only two real contestants and that they can both put away their fair share of dogs.

Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi is the veteran of the field, having held the crown for six years, doubling the previous record of 25 hot dogs in his first attempt. He continued to dominate the Nathan’s competition throughout the early 00s, smashing his own world record three times, until a kid named Chestnut stole his thunder.

In 2007 a 23-year-old Californian by the name of Joey “Jaws” Chestnut – who had finished second to Kobayashi in 06 – smashed the previous record of 54 hot dogs by consuming a staggering 66 dogs. By the time 2008 rolled around there was a new ten-minute time limit in place and nobody knew how that would affect the contestants. But they weren’t to be let down as both Jaws and Tsunami stuffed 59 hot dogs down their throats to take the game into overtime. Chestnut eventually defended his title with a five-dog eat off win, but who knows what will happen this year.

If you’re into strange sports or just strange people, check out Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on Saturday and have a wager at BetUS. Should be a pretty fun day for everyone except the contestants.
